Samsung Galaxy Fold is coming to South Africa, arrives September

Back in February Samsung made a surprise announcement on the evening of the Galaxy S10 series launch.

That announcement was of course the gawk-worthy Galaxy Fold, a smartphone that represented a new pinnacle of engineering for Samsung.

Having been delayed for months, Samsung co-chief executive officer DJ Koh admitted in July that the launch of the handset had been rushed and that it would once again become available in September.

During last night’s Samsung Galaxy Note 10 launch, the Galaxy Fold was notably absent and as such we approached Samsung South Africa chief executive officer, Sung Yoon to find out whether the phone was still destined for local shores.

“The Galaxy Fold will launch in this country (South Africa) in September,” Yoon told Hypertext.

“What happened was a couple of, I guess you can call them techie reviewers, who were very suspicious of our product, they actually broke our screens,” said Yoon.

Ahead of its release in April reviewers were sent Galaxy Fold units to test out. By doing this it quickly became apparent that the Fold was not ready for widespread use as folks removed an important film protecting the screen. Beyond that, the spine of the Fold featured a sizeable gap where dirt could become lodged.

The local Samsung CEO tells us that gap has been closed and the film is now secured in such a way so as to not inspire folks to peel it off when they receive their handset.

Of course Samsung is remaining tight-lipped about local pricing but we suspect it’s going to cost a lot of money.

For those who can’t wait that long, pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 open today and you’ll get that handset before or on 30th August.
