New plug-in Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid does 0-100km/h in 3.8 secs

For most South Africans, our first port of call when it comes to hybrid cars is the Toyota Prius, which isn’t exactly a vehicle that’s exciting to drive. Potentially changing all perceptions about hybrid cars is the latest offering from Porsche – the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid and Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupé.

Both vehicles are scheduled for release in 2020, although their local status remains unconfirmed considering they were only just unveiled by the German carmaker.

As for the reason why you clicked on this story, both of these hybrid SUVs are fast. Like put a VW Golf R32 to shame fast.

To that end both models have been fitted with a four-litre V8 biturbo engine by Porsche, alongside the 14.1kWh batteries onboard, to yield a 0-100km/h time of 3.8 seconds. Added to this is a top speed of 295km/h, with the sole electric portion of the vehicles delivering 135km/h of speed alone.

There’s also a V6 version of the engine for the S E-Hybrid and S E-Hybrid Coupé.

Along with the raw power on offer, Porsche is also touting the emissions quality of both models, with each capable of driving 40 kilometres without any emissions being made. Porsche is remaining mum on the combined driving range for the new hybrid SUVs, however which makes us think that they will likely require trips to a charging station quite often.

Also missing is recommended pricing, but all four models in the new Cayenne S E-Hybrid range are up for pre-order in select countries like Porsche’s native Germany.
