You can unofficially buy Mega Construx in South Africa

While LEGO is widely available in South Africa as well as officially supported with things like name brand stores, the same cannot be said for Mega Construx.

As a quick reminder: Mega Construx is the rebranded name of the Mega Bloks line of toys. While “Mega Bloks” still exists for a range basic blocks targeted at very young kids, Mega Construx has all the cool licensed stuff like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Destiny.

Mega Bloks can still be found in South Africa in limited quantities at a select few stores, but Mega Construx is nowhere to be seen.

Thankfully there is still a way to get some of the Mega Construx line in the country by way of Raru.

The local online retailer has a sizeable import section which – while more expensive than usual with long delivery times – is still a better choice than personally importing items, especially with the limited number of times you as an individual are allowed to import in any given year.

At the time of writing Raru has a select range of the sets from three themes: Pokémon, Halo and Call of Duty.

All of the Mega Construx sets available right now.

The five Pokémon sets were added recently and are relatively new products even overseas. The Halo and Call of Duty ones were added earlier this year, but are all still available at the time of writing.

Looking at the prices here and they’re relatively good. The Scyther Pokémon set, for example, is $19.99, converting to ~R307 at the time of writing. Raru is selling the set for R403.

Considering the fact that the US Price doesn’t even include VAT, and South Africans have to deal with import duties and delivery fees, that price difference is acceptable.

Those looking to buy any of these should keep in mind that they take a while to be delivered due to the fact that Raru imports them on request. All of these sets are “dispatched in 10 to 15 working days” and delivery can sometimes take longer than that.

We also have to warn about Raru itself. While they’re a solid online retailer with a proven track record, they’re known to make some pretty bad blunders and missteps when it comes to fulfilling orders. It happened to us this year when we bought a graphics card, so keep that in mind.

That being said, we’re happy to see these products available in South Africa where they were not sold before.
