Gears 5 branded Xbox One X selling for R8999 in South Africa

If limited edition consoles branded with the latest game is your thing, a new skinned version of the 1TB Xbox One X is on pre-order in South Africa for R8 999.

At the time of writing we’ve seen both Raru and BT Games offering the console. Raru has an expected release date of 6th September, which is four days before the game launches. If that date is true those extra days are probably to account for shipping so buyers can start playing on 10th September, or the Gears 5 code simply won’t unlock until then.

For your money you’re getting an a white Xbox One X which is mostly white and grey with the Gears of War cog logo taking up most of the top of the console.

The controller too is branded in this way and features some nice blue accents. Those wanting to buy just the controller can, thankfully, do that, as both stores are selling it separately. Raru and BT Games are again matched on price here with the controller costing R1 299. Oddly, both parties have the controller listed for a 10th September release.

In terms of software you of course get a game download of Gears 5 Ultimate Edition, as well as Gears Of War Ultimate Edition, and Gears of War 2, 3 and 4. A month of Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass is thrown in too.

So how much are you paying here for this limited edition? Actually, not much at all compared to the regular console. Both stores sell the standard black 1TB Xbox One X (with one controller) for R7 999 at the time of writing.

The Ultimate Edition of Gears 5 goes for  R1 199 (Raru) / R1 229 (BT Games) so you’re “saving” money if you intended to buy a regular console and the game separately.

As for the controller, the Gears 5 version is the newer Bluetooth model. Prices for those range wildly but the R1 299 is about in the ballpark of what you’d expect to pay for one of these branded controllers.

While we do usually recommend against pre-ordering, the main draw of the purchase here is the hardware and not the software. The Xbox One X and the controllers for it are extensively covered in the years since their respective launches, so you know what you’re getting here, it’s just a matter of taste for this particular skin.

As for Gears 5, it will be available as part of Xbox Game Pass at launch, even on PC, which makes that the cheapest way to play it right when it comes out.
