ZACR has registered 1.2 million CO.ZA domains in 24 years

Back in 1988 the ZA Central Registry (ZACR) was incorporated but back then it was known as UniForum SA.

The non-profit organisation was initially founded to promote open systems and networks. The firm would then move to administering the second-level CO.ZA domain and 24 years later that process has reached a notable landmark.

The ZACR has announced that on its 31st birthday it is also celebrating 1.2 million CO.ZA domains.

“We are proud to continue to diligently fulfill the trust bestowed upon us by the ICT industry including our invaluable Registrar and Reseller partners and the South African Internet community to look after South African domain names such as CO.ZA,” ZACR chief executive officer, Lucky Masilela, said in a statement.

Aside from CO.ZA, ZACR also administers WEB.ZA. ORG.ZA and NET.ZA domains. In 2017 the non-profit organisation added the dotCapeTown, dotJoburg and dotDurban domain names to the mix as well. Those domains have racked up 12 000 registrations to date.

The dotAfrica geographic Top Level Domain is also been administered by ZACR since 2017.

“Our birthday is also a time to congratulate the many domain name registrants that continue to invest in South Africa’s presence on the worldwide web,” concluded Masilela.
