Huawei hopes to launch the Mate X in South Africa before year’s end

If you’ve been following the fate of foldable phones in 2019, you know that Samsung will launch the Galaxy Fold in South Africa sometime next month. What about the Huawei Mate X then?

Well we asked Huawei’s local executives that precise question at a media briefing earlier this morning. While said briefing was focused more on HarmonyOS, it also touched on the firm’s local business strategy, which the Mate X no doubt plays a big part in for 2019.

To that end Huawei SA’s CTO Akhram Mohamed and GM Likun Zhao expressed their desire to bring the device into the country before 2019 ends.

That said, they could not commit to making that happen. This as much like Huawei from a global perspective, the local team is hampered by some of the issues that the firm noted during a press event at its Shenzen HQ earlier this week, regarding the delayed launch of the Mate X.

With Huawei confirming to European media that the foldable 5G device will launch sometime between September and November, we’re hoping that South Africa falls somewhere in that window, especially as the country is a key market for the firm.

Along with the intriguing design and 5G functionality, it should be interesting to see how much the Mate X will cost when launched locally. With Huawei having a history of aggressive pricing, even for its premium devices, the price tag on the Mate X will likely determine how many consumers will want to purchase it.

We’ve already heard murmurings that the Galaxy Fold will cost in excess of R60 000, so Huawei’s price is well worth keeping note of.

Either way, 2019 has not been a good year for foldable devices.
