Kaspersky users detected 16 017 ransomware modifications in Q2 2019

When talking about dangerous malware we can’t help but mention ransomware – malicious software that encrypts your data and demands a ransom to decrypt it.

According to Kaspersky’s IT Threat Evolution Q2 2019 report, modified ransomware is becoming an enormous problem.

The report found that during Q2 of 2019, 16 017 new ransomware modifications were detected.

The firm says that this is a sign that cybercriminals are investing heavily in the attack vector and a worrying amount of new families and modifications are popping up.

As many as 232 292 users were targeted in Q2 2019 representing a 46 percent increase for the same period in 2018.

“In this quarter we observed an increase in the number of new ransomware modifications, even though the Gandcrab family closed down in early June. The GandCrab ransomware family has long been one of the most popular cryptors amongst cybercriminals. For more than 18 months it has stayed in the list of the most rampant ransomware families we detect, but even its decline did not lower the statistics, as there are still other numerous widespread Trojans,” says security researcher at Kaspersky, Fedor Sinitsyn.

“We expect new actors to replace GandCrab and urge everyone to protect their devices by installing software updates regularly and choosing a reliable security solution,” the researcher added.

Kaspersky says that the most used ransomware family remains WannaCry. This is strange as Microsoft patched its operating system to prevent the spread of WannaCry many years ago.
