Fourth Matrix movie happening, with Keanu Reeves set to play Neo

It has been 20 years since the original Matrix film wowed audiences, and now there is going to be a fourth Matrix movie.

Warner Bros., which produced the first three films, confirmed the news by announcing that the next instalment in the much-beloved franchise will be written and directed by Lana Wachowski.

While it is indeed pleasing to hear that one of the minds that brought the original Matrix movie to fruition is attached to the project, perhaps more important to fans is that Keanu Reeves (everyone’s favourite human being) will reprise his role as Neo, alongside Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity.

This latest bit of news comes as AMC theatres in the US will have special screenings of The Matrix starting from 30th August, and hopefully local cinema companies follow suit.

As for the fourth movie, little is known at this stage, apart from the early talent that is attached to the project.

If Reeves and Moss are returning, we’re hoping that there is room for the likes of Lawrence Fishburne as Morpheus and Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith too, but confirmations of additional castings have been made yet. That said, rumours suggest a younger Morpheus will be cast for the film.

Also unclear is when this new Matrix film will be set, with both Neo and Trinity having seemingly met their respective ends in Matrix Revolutions.

In that film, the Matrix programme rebooted, so perhaps Neo and Trinity only exist in the virtual machine-created world in this upcoming film?

Regardless we’re holding thumbs that Lana Wachowski can give fans of the franchise what they want with this new project.

For now, no release date or production start date has been mentioned.
