Katlehong Engineering School partners with MerSeta, Fury Ford and more to address skills shortage

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has launched the Engineering School of Specialisation in Katlehong.

Strategically situated in the Eastern Economic Development corridor, the school will focus on equipping learners with skills in the transport, manufacturing and logistics sectors.

Aside from government, the school has partnered with a number of private and public companies including the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services SETA (MerSeta), Samsung Electronics, Hatfield VW, Fury Ford Group, Komatsu Mining, Austrian Education Department and the Tshwane IDC.

“Our partnership with the private sector has been fundamental in providing learners with workplace experience, learnerships, artisanships and entrepreneurial skills,” Lesufi told SA News.

Learners who pass Mathematics and Physical Science at the Engineering School of Specialisation will receive a bit of help from MerSeta as well.

Learners that pass the aforementioned subjects will receive placement assistance to become trained Ford, VW, Toyota and Mazda technicians.

Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners will receive training from Samsung Electronics weekly at the firm’s academy in Midrand.

The Engineering School of Specialisation is the eighth school of specialisation launched by the Gauteng Education Department and Lesufi said there are plans to have 35 of these schools by 2022.

“It is important to invest in our children because they are our future. This is revolution and quality education we are advocating for, which learners will benefit from,” concluded the MEC.
