5G and evolving telco requirements among topics at SATNAC 2019

A fixture on the local conference scene, SATNAC 2019 is scheduled to happen early next month. 1st to 4th September to be more precise, and one of the key topics that will be spoken about at the week-long event is 5G.

It’s a technology that has been touted for the past couple of years for its disruptive capabilities, and SATNAC 2019 aims to shine a spotlight in particular on the readiness of local operators for the broadband standard.

“The conference, hosted by Telkom and its partners, will discuss South African operators’ readiness to deal with the increasing data requirements that AI and IOT will place on networks. Keynote speakers who are authorities on 5G and ICT are on the conference programme,” explains a media release about the event from Telkom.

“Next-generation network specialist Prof. Thomas Magedanz from Fraunhofer Fokus, working in the convergence field of telecommunications, internet and information technologies, will share the use cases in a realistic environment and share the complexities of running a complete system. The Fraunhofer 5G Playground represents in this regard the world´s most advanced Open 5G testbed,” it adds.

We’re hoping this year’s event will bring the conversation around spectrum to the fore as well, with 5G having originally been touted for readiness later this year, yet no movement has been made on that front.

“Telkom’s modernised next-generation core network, through the POTN, enables data growth across access, aggregation and core networks. We are well positioned to support the requirements of the 5G era,” notes Sipho Maseko, group CEO of Telkom.

While we have no doubt of Telkom’s ability to support, without the necessary spectrum, little to nothing will happen. With government representatives expected in attendance at SATNAC 2019, as well as leaders in the 5G field – Huawei and Nokia – sponsors too, here’s hoping that all necessary parties are able to get the ball rolling following the conference.
