Android Q is officially called Android 10

Google has now confirmed that its latest version of Android will begin rolling out to devices in the next few weeks, depending on the manufacturer of the device. In past years this announcement usually meant we got a name for the new mobile operating system, but sadly in the case of Android Q, Google is going to call it Android 10.

As such our wishful thinking that Google would name Android Q, Android Quality Street, are gone.

The firm also explained its decision to change the naming convention for this latest release, which will also set the direction for how Google names its mobile OS moving forward.

“Our engineering team has always used internal code names for each version, based off of tasty treats, or desserts, in alphabetical order. This naming tradition has become a fun part of the release each year externally, too. But we’ve heard feedback over the years that the names weren’t always understood by everyone in the global community,” writes VP of product management, Sameer Samat.

“As a global operating system, it’s important that these names are clear and relatable for everyone in the world. So, this next release of Android will simply use the version number and be called Android 10,” adds the VP.

Along with the change to naming convention, the Android design and logo is changing slightly to align a bit more with that of Google, which the firm details in the video pasted below.

While we are sad to see the dessert names go, what is of more importance for us, is how quickly Google can start rolling out Android 10, with it proving a problem for users in the past, especially if you don’t own a Pixel device, or a phone running pure Android.

As for what new phones will sport the OS, we’ll likely have to wait until MWC next year.
