On Monday Nvidia and VMware announced that together they would be introducing a new product in the form of virtualised GPUs.

As businesses begin to dip their toes into technologies such as artificial intelligence the demand for high powered GPUs increases.

To solve this problem Nvidia is bringing its T4 GPUs and Nvidia Virtual Compute Server software to VMware Cloud running on AWS. That’s not all VMware is bringing to the party (though a platform is rather important we’ll admit) as with recently acquired Bitfusion, GPUs can be made more efficient for AI and ML workloads.

“Together with VMware, we’re designing the most advanced GPU infrastructure to foster innovation across the enterprise, from virtualization, to hybrid cloud, to VMware’s new Bitfusion data center disaggregation,” said Nvidia chief executive officer, Jensen Huang.

Once the product is launched Nvidia says customers will be able to move workloads currently being powered by Nvidia vComputeServer and GPUs with a single click thanks in part to VMware HCX.

Given that this solution leverages AWS VMware is able to scale its VMware Cloud depending on the need.

“Through new innovations driven by partnerships we have with industry leaders such as NVIDIA and AWS, we will bring best-in-class GPU acceleration services for the most intense data-driven workloads and modern applications across the hybrid cloud,” said VMware chief executive officer Pat Gelsinger.

There’s no word on when this product will hit servers with Nvidia only stating that the pair “intends” to launch the service.

That having been said, the ability to spin up GPUs for AI purposes will likely be incredibly valuable for folks working on applications powered by next-generation technologies.
