Fitbit Versa 2 sees light of day alongside new Premium subscription service

Fitbit is becoming an increasingly popular brand in South Africa, not least of all because of the Vitality reward points its fitness-focused wearables can help you earn. Now the company has a new smartwatch to offer in the form of the Versa 2, with the firm also debuting a new Premium subscription service.

Starting with the new smartwatch, it features an OLED display as well as a claimed five days-plus battery life. As with the previous generations, 24/7 heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, and controls for third-party apps like Spotify are also included.

The Versa 2 also adds support for Amazon Alexa, but with the digital assistant still to be supported locally, it remains to be seen if South Africans will be able to access the functionality.

What is known though is when the Versa 2 will land in SA, with it expected to be available at select retailers in mid-October. As far as pricing goes the recommended price tag for the standard model of Versa 2 is R3 999, with the Special Edition costing R4 999 (RRP).

Shifting to the new Premium subscription service, it will reportedly provide personalised coaching, goals and challenges for users to tap into. Fitbit also plans to launch the service later this year in 17 countries, but once again, it’s unclear at this stage whether South Africa is part of that list.

It will also provide more insight with the data one of its devices captures, and extends further that what is on offer from the free version of the Fitbit app.

Whether consumers will be willing to pay more for the insights remains to be seen, with it costing $9.99 a month in the US, or $79.99 for a year. As such it may only be used by the seriously fitness-obsessed.
