Google reportedly says Huawei Mate 30 cannot launch with official Google apps

Huawei is expected to launch a new iteration of its Mate series of flagship devices, the Mate 30, some time next month, but the forthcoming device’s launch may have hit a major snag.

To that end an unnamed Google spokesperson has told Reuters that the smartphone will not be sold with any official Google apps like YouTube, Maps or Gmail.

“A Google spokesman told Reuters the Mate 30 cannot be sold with licensed Google apps and services due to the U.S. ban on sales to Huawei. A temporary reprieve that the U.S. government announced last week does not apply to new products such as the Mate 30,” the spokesman told Reuters.

While apps are reportedly off the table for the Mate 30, it is believed that the upcoming device will still run Android, which is something that many consumers feared when the first trade restriction was imposed by the US government earlier this year.

At the time of writing Huawei has not commented on the reports, with the Chinese firm yet to officially announce a global unveiling date for the Mate 30. When that date is confirmed by the company, hopefully it will also address some of the concerns at the same time.

Yes, official Google apps are not crucial to the functioning of an Android phone, but having tools like Google Maps and indeed the Play Store available on a device are crucial to the overall experience.

Should this report indeed be true, it places another cloud of uncertainty over Huawei and the future success of its smartphone business. With the firm having recently revealed its HarmonyOS, it may have to ready it for launch on the Mate 30, especially if the Android experience is compromised by a lack of official Google apps.

With this being a developing story, we’ll await official comment from Huawei on the matter, and keep interested Hypertext readers in the loop.
