Fox’s War of the Worlds show has hints of The Day of the Triffids

Back in June we got our first look at War of the Worlds, an eight part TV series re-imagining of the H. G. Wells story set in Europe.

“When astronomers detect a transmission from another galaxy, it is definitive proof of intelligent extra-terrestrial life,” A press release for the show reads, “The world’s population waits for further contact with baited breath. They do not have to wait long. Within days, mankind is all but wiped out; just pockets of humanity are left in an eerily deserted world.”

While the show is set to air in October no trailers have been released so far. Thankfully, at a recent Disney Showcase event, we got to see some early cuts of the programme to tell you how it’s shaping up.

Firstly, if all you can think of when it comes to the War of the Worlds name is the 2005 Tom Cruise movie, it looks like the show is steering well clear of that kind of bombastic nature. Instead it seems to be going in the direction of another piece of classic literature: The Day of the Triffids.

As you may expect from that official description there’s a lot of worldwide panic but, it appears, after that the survivors are left to wonder about dazed and confused as to what happened. On top of that one of the characters even mentions losing her sight at one point, which is a key aspect of The Day of the Triffids.

This is all to say that the show feels like more of a measured approach relying on intrigue, which is why the main leads Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern seem to be some kind of scientists investigating signals from the aliens. You’ll notice the two in an elevator in one of the set shots below, coupled with several extras in an underground station.

On top of this the short snippet we saw seemed to imply that backstabbing or double crossing will factor into the story. We’re not sure if this is an intentional misdirect, the aliens doing some mind controlling, a small number of people betraying humans, or something else entirely.

We’re almost certain that what we saw, or some version of it, will be released as a trailer soon, at which point you can have a look yourself.

War of the Worlds will be releasing across most parts of Europe and Africa starting on 30th October at 20:45. Each of the eight episodes will run for sixty minutes and the show will end come 18th December.
