IFA 2019: What To Expect

IFA 2019 kicks off this week in Berlin, with the German city having played host to the annual consumer technology event.

In recent years the likes of Samsung and Huawei have opted to forego debuting flagship devices at the event, instead focusing on wearables, processors and mid-range phones.

Nevertheless there is still plenty to look forward to for the week-long conferences planned, with firms such as Sony, LG, Acer and HMD Global (Nokia Mobile) afforded a bigger spotlight to showcase its wares.

With that in mind, and to prepare for the number of announces coming out of Berlin, we’ve taken a look at the rumours and reports with some substance, and listed what to expect from some of the big names (in alphabetical order) in attendance at IFA this week.

Acer

A fixture in recent years, Acer will host its press conference for this year’s IFA on 4th September. Previously the Taiwanese company has surprised with a gaming smartphone and other interesting accessories, but it looks like it will stick to its guns this time round.

As such we should see some refreshes for the Swift and Switch series of notebooks, as well as more offerings in the Predator gaming lineup, not to mention a few additions to the ConceptD creator range too.

Asus

Another company that has become an IFA regular, Asus is expected to debut the next iteration of ZenBook in Berlin, as it has done in past years. Added to this is Asus’ own ROG gaming division, which too should have some new hardware for consumers to get excited about.

As for whether the firm plans to add to its gaming phone lineup, remains to be seen.

Huawei

We aren’t anticipating a debut of the Mate 30 series in Berlin, but we could see the silicon that the flagship phone will tout. In previous years the Chinese firm has unveiled Kirin processors, and 2019 should be no different.

Also interesting to see is whether Huawei reveals more information or devices for its new HarmonyOS, as well as whether the firm addresses new concerns over its position with Google and its Android operating system.

HMD Global (Nokia Mobile)

As it has done ever since having new life breathed into it by HMD Global, Nokia Mobile will likely debut a number of new entry-level and mid-range phones, as has been the manufacturer’s focus of late.

There is no successor to the Nokia 9 PureView rumoured, but leaks for the Nokia 7.2 have already done the rounds, so expect that to be revealed officially too.

Lenovo

For Lenovo we’re going off of its past tactics for IFA, which means some new Yoga notebooks are likely in the offing. There is also talk that the firm is readying to reveal some 5G-supporting notebooks with all-day battery life.

Another rumour surrounds its much-talked about foldable phone inspired by the classic RAZR, which we could get more info on. With Lenovo Tech World happening later this month, the firm may also choose to reserve some truly special announcements for then.

LG

The South Korean firm has already been teasing some features for its IFA device, with multiple screen accessories being touted. With a press conference happening on 6th September will debut a new flagship phone, which will hopefully land locally promptly.

There’s also two new K series mid-range phones that have already been announced, along with some smart appliances on the cards from LG.

Samsung

With the Galaxy Note 10 already launching locally, there won’t be much in the form of mobile devices from Samsung at IFA 2019.

Instead the South Korean firm will focus more on its smart appliances and 8K TVs, as it gives some of its other consumer tech lineups some attention.

Sony

This past weekend saw leaked images of a Sony device surface, with many suggesting that it is the new Xperia 2 smartphone that the Japanese company is believed to have in the works for IFA this year.

Along with a new flagship phone, some mid-range options, as well as some audio accessories in the form of head/earphones are expected too at IFA 2019.

Qualcomm

Rounding off things is Qualcomm, with the silicon maker likely punting its efforts as far as 5G goes. This means more modems could be unveiled, as well as some potential processors for mid-range and entry-level devices.

As such we should get a better idea of how many more 5G-supporting devices will be revealed at MWC next year, based on what Qualcomm showcases this week.
