A notebook purpose-built for teachers & learners alike – The Acer TravelMate Spin B

The South African education space is getting serious about technology. President Cyril Ramaphosa has noted the importance of preparing our children for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the need to develop skills for jobs that do not exist yet, especially if South Africa is going to keep pace with its international counterparts.

To that end, the presidency and various government departments have announced several initiatives and committees aimed at looking at the requirements to better prepare the next generation of workers.

To do so, the right tools need to be put into the hands of both teachers and learners. As such devices like the Acer TravelMate Spin B notebook are a must for any primary and high school as well as  tertiary institution wanting to give its staff and students a distinct advantage.

Says Terrence Naidoo, Tarsus Distribution Education Business Unit Manager, “We understand the importance of access to the right equipment, such as the TravelMate Spin B for educational institutions. In addition, we are aware that it is not only about having the correct equipment; as a distribution house, we have ensured that our education business unit focusses on delivering a solution that caters to the maximum needs of our educational institutions.”

Playground-Proof

One of the key aspects to the Spin B is its construction. The convertible notebook features an 11.6″ Full HD touchscreen (1366×768) upfront with Gorilla Glass 3 to ensure it can handle a few knocks and scrapes here and there. This is an especially important element to consider when the notebook is likely to be used by more than one learner.

The display, which can flip 360 degrees, has stylus support too should your child want to use something more precise than their finger, along with expressing their creativity. Having these kinds of features help to ensure your child becomes more comfortable with technology, and if they have an aptitude for design, to explore those avenues freely.

Also helping to ensure that it can cope with a hectic school day, the Spin B has a spill-resistant keyboard (up to 330ml). Added to this is a shock-absorbent rubberised bumper which can muster falls from as high as 122 centimetres.

It’s this kind of durability that will give parents peace of mind that this education-focus notebook moves from the boot of their car, to their child’s classroom and back again with no hassles.

Solidly specced

Shifting to what the Spin B is sporting internally, Acer has opted for a setup that takes care of processing elements that are most essential. To that end, there is nothing inside this notebook that is surplus to requirements, with a choice of Intel Pentium N4200, Celeron N3450 or N3350 processors.

The Taiwanese company has also included up to 4GB of RAM, and an option of Intel HD 505 or 500 to take care of graphics, as well as a generous 128GB worth of speedy SSD storage. On the connectivity side of things, WiFi is facilitated via the 802.11ac standard, with a bevy of ports thrown in for good measure, including an HDMI, a USB 3.1, two USB 2.0, and an SD card reader.

Another important consideration for any education-focused notebook is battery life. Luckily, the TravelMate Spin B excels here too, with up to 13 hours of battery life being touted. If a plug point is not always close at hand, this portion of the notebook becomes all the more important and allows learning or homework to be performed without fears of the device powering down unexpectedly.

In terms of being a zero-fuss notebook, the Spin B comes well-appointed. The Taiwanese manufacturer has ensured that everything a learner, and equally important a teacher, needs are well catered for.
