It looks like the Wii Fit replacement is a thigh strap and a piece of rubber

Not one to just go along with what everyone else is doing in the gaming world, Nintendo has revealed a bizarre new system containing two new pieces of hardware that appear to be a replacement for the Wii Fit.

This is less of a reveal and more of a teaser as more details of what exactly this is will be shared on 12th September, just a few days from now. But we do have a short trailer (embedded below) which explains a lot about what’s going on here.

Called “a new experience” by Nintendo, the community has already dubbed it the “Switch Fit” carrying on the name from the exercise system from years past which used the Wii Balance Board.

Instead of the board, Switch Fit has a strap that sits on your thigh and what appears to be a rigid piece of circular rubber.

Both pieces can have Joy-Cons slotted into them so your Switch (and whatever software this comes with) can track what you’re doing.

The trailer then shows off a variety of exercises that can be done with the pair. The rubber circle appears to offer up quite a bit of resistance to both stretching and compressing it, so both movements can be used to work out.

We don’t get a single look at what’s happening on any screens, so what the Switch will be out putting is a mystery right now. There seems to be some gamification being put into it, but maybe that’s just advert actors, well, over acting.

This reveal also comes at a particularly strange time as the Nintendo Switch Lite is due to launch later this month. The new console doesn’t have removable Joy-Cons so it won’t be compatible with Switch Fit out of the box.

The reveal can be watched below and we should see more of Switch Fit – or whatever its name is – next week.
