Apple will break from tradition and stream its iPhone event on YouTube

Traditionally, if you’ve wanted to watch the annual Apple iPhone event, you’ve had to be using the Safari browser or Microsoft Edge.

Last year Apple allowed users to stream the event using a Chrome browser for the first time but you were required to stream from the Apple website.

Now Apple appears to have thrown caution to the wind and it will stream its Apple Special Event on 10th September through YouTube.

Heading to Apple’s official YouTube channel will reveal a stream for the event set to go live at 19:00 CAT.

You are able to set a reminder for yourself so you don’t forget to tune in on Tuesday evening.

The question we want the answer to is why Apple has made the choice to stream on YouTube. The reason the firm hasn’t opted to stream on YouTube was because it preferred using HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology. The Edge, Safari and Chrome browsers support this technology but until recently YouTube didn’t.

A developer guide over on the Google developer website reveals that support for HLS is currently a beta feature so perhaps Apple is taking the risk to test it out. Should the stream fail you can simply visit the Apple website.

While that technical explanation makes sense, Apple could simply be hoping to reach more people through YouTube. With its market share slipping that could be the case but we’re inclined to think HLS support from YouTube was the deciding factor here.
