A Windows update may be the cause of your Borderlands 3 audio issues

Borderlands 3 launched on Friday and has had a bevy of problems both on console and PC. If you’re on the latter platform and you’re experiencing audio issues, it may be Windows to blame and not Gearbox / 2K Games.

The Windows September update KB4515384 has been causing a wide range of problems, with one of them being game audio. Specifically multi-channel audio has been affected.

As written in the “known issues” part of this update: “Microsoft has received reports that audio in certain games is quieter or different than expected after installing this update… This may result in games sounding different than customers are used to and may have missing channels.”

This would certainly explain some of the horrendous audio issues we’ve been experiencing in our playthrough of Borderlands 3. One of the biggest problems we’ve had – character voices becoming incredibly low when you’re not right in front of them – may be attributed to this Windows issue.

“To mitigate the issue, open settings in the impacted game and disable multi-channel audio, if this option is available,” The update reads, “You can also search in the Windows Control Panel for third-party audio device control panels and disable Multi-channel audio or Virtual Surround Sound, if these options are available.”

In Borderlands 3 the closest menu option to the one mentioned above is spatial sound. It’s in the audio “Sound” section of the options menu and is positioned right at the bottom under the “Advanced” subheading.

Unfortunately this wasn’t the cause of our audio problems, as this option was already turned off in-game and Virtual Surround is disabled on the PC we’re playing Borderlands 3 on.

That, however, doesn’t mean it won’t work for you. Follow the instructions provided above and see if it makes a difference in your game.

While Borderlands 3 is rife with audio issues in our instance, this Windows problem may also extend to other games, so keep this in mind if any games you’re playing recently don’t sound quite right.

Microsoft has stated that a fix for this problem will be available in late September. If that doesn’t set things straight hopefully a patch from Gearbox / 2K Games will.
