Minecraft has racked up 112 million active players a month

Longevity is difficult to achieve at the best of times, and especially so for games, with newcomers arriving each month and vying for player’s attention. One title that has been able to carve out a large following for itself is Minecraft, with Microsoft’s (it owns developer Mojang) Helen Chiang revealing in an interview with Business Insider that it now has 112 million monthly active players.

The game has been able to amass 20 million over the past year across all platforms, with Chiang describing Minecraft as an offering that players can pick up again quite easily, which is why is has maintained an evergreen status over the past decade.

The partnership with Microsoft hasn’t hurt either, with it allowing Minecraft to become available to both PC and console players (Xbox) as a result.

Added to this is the game’s design which can port easily across platforms, as well as its developers staying engaged with the community and constantly providing updates and refinements.

One such update has come in the form of ray tracing via Nvidia, along with the augmented reality Minecraft Earth game, which is currently being played in beta for iOS and Android users.

Another factor one has to consider is the influence of personalities like PewDiePie, with the world’s most subscribed YouTuber having released a number of videos playing Minecraft of late.

With Fortnite the gaming darling at the moment, it should be interesting to see if it too can muster the same sort of following that Minecraft has when it reaches the 10 year mark.
