Apple wants to trademark the term “Slofie”

Last week Apple unveiled its latest smartphones, the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, and the event was okay to put it best with neither device really showcasing anything revolutionary.

One of the more interesting features on the new devices, depending on who you ask, is the ability to shoot slow-mo live photos with the front facing camera, or “slofie” as Apple calls it.

Now it looks like the firm is trying to trademark the term for some reason, with a filing current sitting with the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USTPO). More specifically Apple is trying to patent, “downloadable computer software for use in capturing and recording video,” according to the details of the filing.

If none of that made sense, Apple is trying to ensure that app developers and other manufacturers don’t use the term for their own version of the feature. As such we could see a bunch of companies and apps add the ability to shoot a slofie, but not actually be able to use this specific word for them.

Should the term catch on, which we don’t think is likely, it will mean Apple would have been the originators.

Terms like these have had mixed success in the past, with Nokia Mobile’s bothie feature first seen on the Nokia 8, failing to catch on really.

Given Apple’s popularity, and ability to make even the most standard of features highly covetable, it would not surprise us if the firm makes slofies a thing, but we’re hoping not.

Instead we’d like to see Apple get more innovative on the hardware side of things, with more recent iPhones failing to set the mobile world alight.
