Twitter wants to promote healthier conversations with “hide replies” feature

Twitter is giving users even more tools with which to control their little space of the internet.

In addition to muting and blocking folks, users will soon be able to hide replies in a conversation. The feature was being tested in Canada and is now being released in the US and Japan according to The Verge.

During its testing phase in Canada, Twitter noted a number of positive trends when folks were able to hide replies.

For one, Twitter says folks were more likely to reconsider their interactions when their tweet was hidden. However, when Twitter revealed numbers it said that only 27 percent of users would reconsider their interactions.

The tool appears to function similar to muting specific words but it gives users a more fine-grained approach to muting people who are constantly firing abuse into their mentions.

An example of how the feature works over on the Twitter blog, reveals that other users can see the hidden replies at the tap of a button.

What we would be interested to see however is how this feature actually helps folks have better conversations online.

Twitter was once a place where folks could rally to have important conversations. While we saw this with the #AmINext protests in South Africa recently, the conversation was also punctuated with folks hurling abuse at users of the hashtag.

While giving users greater control of the conversations they see is great, Twitter really should look at how things like being able to start up new accounts moments after old ones are deactivated are dealt with.
