Hands-on with the unreleased games at Comic Con Africa 2019

Right now the second ever Comic Con Africa is underway after its initial outing in 2018, and it’s packed full of games that have yet to be released.

We are writing from the Gallagher Convention Centre where the Con is taking place at the moment, and we just got to give a bunch of these titles below.

The games we played, the platform they were available on at the venue, and our thoughts can be found below.

Keep in mind that these were extremely short play sessions, so they’re closer to first impressions than anything else.

We also didn’t get to play all the unreleased software on offer. We missed Iron Man VR and Nioh 2 because of extremely long lines. The latter appears to be the most sought after demo on the floor.

If you want to play any of the games below, Comic Con Africa is still on at the time of writing, with its last day being 24th September.

The Witcher 3 – Nintendo Switch

We got to test the Switch port of arguably the internet’s favourite game, and it wasn’t a great experience. While the visual fidelity in handheld mode (the only way we got to play) was actually great, the game runs extremely slowly. It feels like Geralt is moving at about half his usual speed and the entire game is unforgivably sluggish.

We’re not sure when this demo build of the game is from, but we sincerely hope it’s old and the game will run better come 15th October.

Aside from that it’s still amazing to see this game running on the Switch, but it really isn’t passable in its current state.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 – Nintendo Switch

Having never played a Luigi’s Mansion game before, we were really surprised by this one.

Not only does the game look amazing (and run well in docked mode) but the gameplay is really satisfying. Each room here is a bit of a puzzle that needs solving, and Luigi has a range of tools to help him that don’t involve Simply jumping on an enemy’s head.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 launches on 31st October, and we’re excited for the full game.

Bee Simulator – PlayStation 4

After our short play of this game it really doesn’t feel like much more than a meme.

We got to play a trailing mission that involved flying through floating rings. Between that – and the rather bad flying controls – we had a bad flashback to Superman 64.

We really hope that this was just a bad mission and the controls will be tightened up before this game comes out on 14th November 2019.

MediEvil  – PlayStation 4

Man, this game looks good. If someone unfamiliar with the franchise played it, there’s no doubt they’d think it was a completely new game.

Unfortunately, once you start actually playing it’s very clear that this is an older game at its core. This game is still fun to play, and the new graphics are superb, but it feels aged.

This game will be resurrected come 25th October this year.

Concrete Genie – PlayStation 4

Now this is a weird one. Concrete Genie sees you using graffiti to create genies which can then interact with what you paint to solve puzzles.

It feels a bit like Scribblenauts, but replace words with paint.

The game is a bit awkward to play because of the motion controls for the painting, so hopefully that is changed a bit when it releases on 8th October.
