Opera Mini now boasts offline file transfer

We’re not saying that transferring files is complicated but rather that it’s a bit of a chore.

Even here in the office we’ve come up with some creative ways of getting photos from one gadget to another. Today we have yet another way of sharing media from Opera and its Opera Mini browser.

The firm has announced the launch of offline file sharing in its browser.

As you might be asking, given that Opera Mini is a smartphone application, why not just use Bluetooth? Well according to Opera, this offline file transfer is 200 times faster than Bluetooth.

That’s because the solution makes use of a direct WiFi connection. Essentially, Opera Mini creates a temporary private network that two devices can join so that files can be transferred.

To send files a user needs to open Opera Mini, go to File Sharing and choose send or receive. From there Opera Mini will display a QR code which needs to be scanned and the file can then be transferred.

“With the new offline file sharing feature, Opera Mini users can now choose to share files at high speeds with people in their proximity, without worrying about low speeds or expensive mobile data,” says head of browsers at Opera, Krystian Kolondra.

The head says that this offline file transfer feature pairs well with Opera Mini’s data compression which currently reduces the size of web pages to just 10 percent of the original size in some instances.

Opera Mini is available to download and use for free from the Google Play Store.
