Ellie is out for revenge in the latest The Last of Us Part II trailer

PlayStation’s latest State of Play event took place yesterday, and while most South Africans fired up the braai on Heritage Day or attended Comic Con Africa, the company revealed a bunch of trailers for upcoming games. One such title is The Last of Us Part II, which received a new trailer starring Ellie.

In the years since the first game she has become quite formidable, as we’ve seen in past gameplay trailers for The Last of Us Part II, and this latest one offers up a bit more detail in terms of what her storyline will be.

Looking only at the trailer pasted below, it appears that Ellie is out for revenge, and aiming to exact justice against a tyrannical group in-game that have hurt the ones she loves. Along with laying out her motivation for this sequel, we also received a release date for the game, which is slated for 21st February next year, PlayStation confirmed in blog post.

“We have a bunch of new stuff to share with you today… starting with the fact that on February 21, 2020 the Last of Us Part II can finally be in your hands,” writes The Last of Us Part II director, Neil Druckmann.

“We began working on this game over five years ago. It’s hard to describe the immense pressure of following up the first game. We know how much you love this world and its characters — especially Ellie and Joel,” he adds.

Another important detail is the appearance of Joel at the end of the trailer, who wants to help Ellie in her search for revenge.

With the dynamic and storytelling around these two central characters one of the best elements of the original game, it will be interesting to see how developers Naughty Dog approach things now that both characters have changed drastically in the sequel.

Last worth mentioning is the different iterations of the game that PlayStation is readying for release, with five options in total for now – Standard, Special, Digital Deluxe, Collector’s and Ellie Edition.

The Standard edition features the game for $59.99 (~R898) and that’s about it, but things get a bit more interesting with the Collector’s and Ellie editions.

To that end the Collector’s edition features a 12” Ellie statue, a wearable replica of Ellie’s bracelet, custom steelbook case, 48 page mini art book, set of six enamel pins, lithograph art print, and a set of five stickers. The Collector’s edition also comes with a voucher for digital content, including a PS4 dynamic theme, a set of six PSN avatars, a digital soundtrack, and a digital version of the mini art book, all costing a recommended $169.99 (~R2 547).

As for the Ellie Edition, it has everything the Collector’s edition does, with the addition of a fully functional recreation of Ellie’s backpack, an embroidered patch, and a 7″ vinyl record featuring music from the original soundtrack, with it recommended to retail for $229.99 (~R3 446).

At the time of writing, we’re yet to see any edition of The Last of Us Part II surface for pre-order at local online retailers, but that should changing in the coming days and weeks, especially as this is one of the most hotly anticipated PlayStation 4 exclusives landing in 2020.

When more local information is announced, we’ll be sure to share the details.
