Destiny: New Light gives you more free content than we expected

When it was announced that Destiny 2 would be getting a free version in Destiny: New Light we were sceptical about what that version would include in terms of content.

With the official release of Destiny 2: Shadowkeep less than a week away, Bungie has now detailed what content will be offered up for free and, truth be told, there is a lot to do for free.

Let’s start off with player versus enemy (PvE) content as this will be the jumping in point for many new players.

The Red War, Curse of Osiris and Warmind will all be made available to all free players. Sadly Forsaken is not included but content from the Year 2 Annual Pass is.

This means free-to-play players will be able to complete Black Armory Forges, Gambit Prime, Reckoning and the Menagerie without spending a cent. This is great news as an influx of new players will mean these activities won’t just die out as veterans dive into new content.

In terms of strikes, New Light players will get access to all Year 1 Nightfall strikes. For regular strikes free-to-play players will have access to the strike playlist but will only be able to launch Year 1 strikes directly from the Director.

For those looking to raid, Year 1 raids are now free so that means every Raid and Raid Lair associated with Leviathan (aside from Crown of Sorrow) can be completed by free-to-play players.

Onward to player vs player (PvP) content.

The Crucible is Destiny 2’s main PvP arena and it is receiving a number of improvements with the release of Shadowkeep. The good news is that all of those improvements will be available for free to all players. All players will receive seasonal updates as well as the ability to earn Crucible gear and weapons.

Finally, in-game events will be open to all players. That means Iron Banner, Festival of the Lost (Halloween event), The Dawning (Festive season event), Crimson Days (Valentine’s Day event), The Revelry (Spring event) and Solstice of Heroes (end of year event) will all be available for free.

In addition to all of the above, free-to-play players can earn all Year 1 exotic weapons and armour (which is a massive grind let me tell you) as well as free roam all destinations in the Destiny 2 universe.

As somebody who has been playing the content above for the last year and has not come close to finishing it all, Bungie is really giving you Destiny for free.

Sure, Forsaken isn’t included (and sadly neither are the skill trees it introduced) but that is arguably the best expansion released to date and well worth the price of admission.

Destiny: New Light releases on Steam (pre-load is available right now), PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on 1st October as does Destiny 2: Shadowkeep.
