The International Motor Show in Frankfurt opens its doors to the public later this week, but with all global events of this nature a few companies have been revealing their latest efforts ahead of time. One such company is Mercedes-Benz, with the carmaker showcasing its new Vision EQS concept car.

Like most concept cars, and by the name, you can tell that the Vision EQS is not the kind of vehicle you’ll be seeing at your local Mercedes-Benz dealership anytime soon.

Instead, apart from looking eye-catching and futuristic as hell, the Vision EQS will serve as a blueprint for the Stuttgart-based comapny’s ambitious electric vehicle (EV) plans.

More specifically Mercedes-Benz says it plans to have 20 fully electric vehicles ready to hit the market by the end of 2020. As such many of those cars will feature design elements and features spotted on the Vision EQS.

These are not simply the cosmetic things either, while those are indeed nice to look at, but also includes some practical aspects too. In this regard the battery-powered engine in the Vision EQS will likely feature in a number of next year’s 20 full EVs, with this concept car sporting a unit that has an output of 349kW and 759Nm of torque.

This translates in a 0-40mph (no kmph listed) acceleration of under 4.5 seconds with a driving range of 700 kilometres too. The same battery pack will support fast charging that delivers 80 percent capacity in 20 minutes, which in the greater scheme of things is more important than the speed numbers.

As mentioned the EQS will only be a concept car at this stage, although we wouldn’t be apposed to Mercedes-Benz making a slightly less futuristic looking real-world version.

For now we’ll need to enjoy the video below of this new concept car in action.
