Destiny 2: Shadowkeep is hiding a NASA Easter egg on the Moon

Shadowkeep is the latest expansion in Destiny 2 and when it goes live at 19:00 CAT, there is an Easter egg waiting to be discovered.

Now we understand that secrets and Destiny are as inseparable as Apple and new marketing terminology but this Easter egg is rather cool because it involves NASA.

In 2021, Artemis-1 is scheduled to head to the Moon. On board that vessel will be the Lunar Polar Hydrogen Mapper (LunaH-Map) which is one of several satellites which will be looking for water and ice on the Moon.

Once LunaH-Map’s mission is complete it will crash land into the South pole of the Moon. Can you guess where Shadowkeep takes place? That’s right the South pole of the Moon. That means players will be able to visit the crash site and for their efforts they will get a unique emblem.

As you may be aware, Destiny’s timeline coincides with our current timeline so seeing a piece of our real world (or is that future real world) in a video game is rather, well, cool.

This Easter egg was made possible through a collaboration with principal investigator for the LunaH-Map mission, Dr Craig Hardgrove. As you might expect Hardgrove plays Destiny and is friends with Art lead at Bungie, Rob Adams according to Mashable.

There are also plans to include a Destiny tribute when Artemis-1 heads to the Moon but that’s still up in the air for now.

For more information on the LunaH-Map mission you can head here.

As for the actual module in Destiny, Bungie hasn’t revealed where it is but we’re sure it won’t be long before somebody stumbles upon it once Shadowkeep launches.

On that note Destiny 2: Shadowkeep launches today for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The new free-to-play offering Destiny: New Light also becomes available for the aforementioned platforms today.
