Microsoft now makes smart, wireless earphones with the Surface Earbuds

Microsoft’s Surface event yesterday featured plenty of new computing hardware, and one surprise device in the form of the Surface Earbuds.

They’re a new pair of wireless smart earphones that Microsoft has added to the Surface lineup, with them adding a bit of functionality for Office 365.

We’ll get to that shortly, but first let’s run through some of the standard smart features that the Surface Earbuds tout.

Firstly the buds can be paired with Android smartphones via Bluetooth, with no mention of iOS compatibility just yet. Once paired with an Android phone users, can play music via their Spotify account, with touch and voice prompts controlling things such as play, pause, skip and volume adjusting.

As for the aforementioned Office 365 features, Microsoft says the Surface Earbuds will allow wearers to access their Outlook accounts and have emails dictated to them, as well as dictating replies. Added to this is access to the Outlook calendar, along with live interaction with Powerpoint.

Microsoft also says the Earbuds boast all-day battery life, although a precise number of hours was unknown, along with a wireless charging case to power the buds when you’re not listening.

In terms of pricing the Earbuds will cost a recommended $249 Stateside, with it being made available later this year. On this front no official date is listed, but we’re assuming it will be in time for the festive season.

Whether we’ll be getting a chance to buy them is unclear, with Surface hardware hard to come by in South Africa.
