Instagram introduces Threads as a messaging service for close friends only

Back in August, The Verge reported on an exclusive story regarding Instagram and a messaging service for its platform called Threads.

A couple of months later those reports proved to spot on as Instagram has now unveiled its new service designed specifically for users to message with their close friends.

According to a blog post from the social media company (which is owned by Facebook), Threads is the latest in a number of offerings that it has integrated in order to keep user eyes fixed on Instagram.

“Threads is a standalone app designed with privacy, speed, and your close connections in mind. You can share photos, videos, messages, Stories, and more with your Instagram close friends list. You are in control of who can reach you on Threads, and you can customize the experience around the people who matter most,” Instagram explained about the new service.

Threads leverages off of the Close Friends list that Instagram introduced back in November last year, and allows users to message directly with them. There will also be a dedicated inbox, as well as tailored notifications. Should you not have a Close Friends set up, you can also create one when you download the Threads app, which is rolling out to both iOS and Android devices globally in the coming days and weeks.

Added to this is the ability to share photos and videos too, along with messages, as well as being able to set up statuses, all of which are context-based. The social media platform adds that statuses are only visible to friends, and opt-in.

Instagram notes that its Direct feature is still up and running, and much of the functionality in Threads has been ported over to that offering. Whether Direct slowly gets phased out if this new arrival finds a solid user base, remains to be seen.

For now it should be interesting to see if Threads picks up the momentum that Instagram is hoping.
