Samsung’s Galaxy Home Bixby speaker is still missing in action

Earlier this week our own Brendyn Lotz asked what is happening with Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, which was seemingly meant to be launched in South Africa in September. We’re now in October and the foldable smartphone is nowhere to be seen, but Samsung says its arrival is imminent.

Another device that may slipped past your radar is the Bixby-powered Galaxy Home smart speaker.

Samsung debuted the device last year, and as The Verge reports, the smart device has missed its second launch date. The Galaxy Home was initially slated for release in select regions sometime in the middle of this year, but that shifted to Q3 of 2019. Like the Fold, the end of September marks the completion of Q3 for Samsung, and still the Galaxy Home is nowhere to be seen.

With the South Korean firm yet to provide an update on its status, or indeed a reason as to why its launch has been missed on two occasions, we’re left wondering if the Galaxy Home will ever see the light of day.

Much of the speaker’s “smart” functionality is powered by Samsung’s digital assistant – Bixby – which has had a mixed public reception ever since debuting on the Galaxy S8 three years ago. If there isn’t a large enough market for the Bixby platform, having a smart speaker that is built around it makes little sense.

With Samsung yet to comment on the matter, as well as whether it wishes to launch the Galaxy Home in South Africa, all we can do is ponder.

Perhaps more information will be forthcoming when Samsung officially launches the Galaxy Fold in SA, whenever that is.
