Latest PS4 update expands Remote Play to all compatible Android devices

Sony is planning to roll an update out for the PlayStation 4 later this week, which isn’t exactly groundbreaking news. What is interesting though, is that a long-standing feature on the console is expanding its support, as Remote Play for Android smartphones is arriving in PS4 update 7.00 the company confirmed.

Along with the Remote Play changes comes some improvements to the Party Mode on the PS4, including the ability to add more players than before, as well as improvements to the network connectivity and audio quality.

Shifting back to Remote Play, Sony notes that it is now accessible to all Android devices (smartphones and tablets) running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher. Previously the feature was only limited to Xperia-designed phones, which was later followed by iOS devices.

The Remote Play app should now be available to download from the Google Play Store, the company adds.

Sony has also cooked up an improvement for iOS devices, with a display to show the controller at all times, along with screen locking capabilities added to the mix.

The final new element a part of this update now allows players to use their DualShock 4 controller via Bluetooth instead of a physical dock. Access to this will require downloading the latest version of mobile software, which means either Android 10, iOS 13 iPadOS 13 or macOS Catalina depending on your device.

Whether this latest update will see an uptick in Remote Play use remains to be seen, but with a number of developers pushing mobile gaming, it’s clear to see that Sony wants to get in on the handheld experience too.
