Samsung Galaxy Fold launching in SA on 18th October, with pre-orders open now

It has been a long and winding road for Samsung and the Galaxy Fold. After several unforeseen delays, the firm’s first foldable flagship phone will be available to purchase in South Africa come 18th October.

You don’t need to wait until next week to secure your own one though, with pre-orders opening this evening and stock is in limited supply, although Samsung Mobile South Africa has not divulged how many units are being brought to SA.

What about price we hear you ask? Well the Galaxy Fold will cost you R43 999. That is indeed an eye watering price, but it is a fair amount less than the price rumours we heard about the device a couple of months ago.

While our crystal ball cannot tell how well the Galaxy Fold will sell locally, it should prove interesting to see if South African consumers with deep pockets are willing to buy this expensive device.

It also appears as if this device cannot be bought on contract at the time of writing, as only one online retailer has it listed for the R43 999 asking price. The pre-order page says orders will be shipped on 17th October, with the limited pre-launch models being sent on 11th October. Sadly the latter is already sold out.

Along with the foldable phone, Samsung will be adding a pair of Galaxy Buds, an Amarid Fiber Cover and Samsung Care+ which covers accidental damage for the first year of ownership.

With Huawei’s Mate X still to arrive locally, not to mention the massive uncertainty involving their operating system future, it looks like Samsung has taken an early victory in the war of the foldable phones.

We’ll be getting hands-on with the Galaxy Fold in the coming days, and serving up our first impressions of this very pricey handset soon.
