Porsche and Boeing working on an electric flying car

We’ve already seen a number of tech companies lay out ambitions to head to the skies, with taxis and ridesharing services in particular leading the way. Now Boeing is getting in on the action, explaining that it plans to make an electric flying car with the help of German firm Porsche.

“Porsche and Boeing signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore the premium urban air mobility market and the extension of urban traffic into airspace. With this partnership, both companies will leverage their unique market strengths and insights to study the future of premium urban air mobility vehicles,” the carmaker noted in a press statement.

As part of the partnership, the companies say an international team will be created to address various aspects of urban air mobility, including analysis of the market potential for premium vehicles and possible use cases.

To that end it will explore whether there is indeed a demand for a solution like an electric flying car, outside of the obvious wow factor.

Currently, Porsche says it is working with Boeing and Aurora Flight Sciences to developing a concept for a fully electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle, but sadly no timeline has been mentioned on when we would be able to see said concept take flight.

A 2018 study conducted by Porsche Consulting forecasts that the urban air mobility market will pick up speed after 2025, so we might have to wait six years before any working vehicles make their way into public view.

The study also indicates that urban air mobility solutions will transport passengers more quickly and efficiently than current conventional means of terrestrial transport, at a lower cost and with greater flexibility.

Whether that will indeed be the case, at least for the common consumer anyway, remains to be seen.
