Charging issue forces Harley-Davidson to halt production of LiveWire

When it comes to electric vehicles (EVs), several companies have been focusing on the car and SUV side of things, but Harley-Davidson has been pioneering electric motorcycles for the most part with its LiveWire offering.

The EV was slated to be commercially available sometime next year, but the manufacturer has had to halt production of the LiveWire due to a reported charging issue.

Said report comes via the Wall Street Journal (paywall), with the publication stating that the issue stems from the vehicle’s charging equipment. The exact nature of the problem is unclear, but Harley-Davidson says it is conduction a number of tests in order to pinpoint the cause.

If you happen to already have a LiveWire electric motorcycle, like Jason Momoa in the video pasted below, Harley-Davidson says it can still charge, but should only be done with professional-grade ChargePoint chargers which are available at most dealerships Stateside.

The company also warns against charging at home at this stage, which is less than ideal, and means owners will need to keep their riding to the vicinity of a dealership.

At the time of writing there is no mention of when production will be resumed once agin, but given that each LiveWire costs $30 000 a pop, it will need to get the problem sorted out quickly. While we understand this is the company’s first electric motorcycle, and there are going to be a few bumps along the way, this latest development does little for confidence.

Let’s hope it gets sorted as soon as possible, as we don’t want to see the LiveWire get scrapped.
