Google Pixel 4 officially revealed with a big focus on AI features

Yesterday the Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL made their official debuts at the firm’s Made By Google event. In the months leading up to the reveal, the Pixel 4 was one of the most leaked phones in quite some time, but many of those leaks involved the design and specifications of the device.

Seeing the phones in full now, it looks as if those leaks were handy distractions to ensure the feature-rich elements of the Pixel 4 and 4 XL did not surface ahead of time.

We’ll get to those features shortly, but let’s touch on some of the specifications onboard. The Pixel 4 has a 5.7″ Full HD+ screen with the larger 4 XL upping dimensions and quality with a 6.3″ QHD+ display present.

Most of the internal components are the same though, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset running things, along with 6GB RAM and a choice between 64GB or 128GB of storage. On the back things are the same two, with a dual camera setup featuring 16MP and 12.2MP lens options, and up front a 8MP lens can be found.

Now for the more interesting stuff, with Google introducing a new feature to the Pixel lineup in MotionSense. There is nothing groundbreaking here, with the likes of LG utilising a similar touch-less gesture option to interact with its own devices recently.

The element we’re more intrigued by is Google Assistant, which the firm has explained is newly improved in a number of ways. Here voice plays a bigger part, allowing you to do more things with your Pixel 4 or 4 XL. There’s also a deeper integration with popular apps for the digital assistant, which means the AI functionality has been extended to a larger ecosystem.

One of the new features we’re particularly keen on checking out is the voice recorder, which can not only automatically tag recordings based on the content, but also leverages AI in order to perform automatic transcribing, as well as search for specific phrases or terminology in recordings and allowing to jump to the precise point it can be found in the file.

The Pixel 4 and 4 XL are available in three colours – Black, White and Orange, with the devices already up for pre-order in the States starting at $799.

As with all Google hardware, getting your hands on it local via official channels is not possible, which makes this latest pair of devices all the more covetable. Should that availability status change for South Africa, we’ll keep all Hypertext readers in the loop.
