Load shedding Stage 2 kicks in again on Thursday

South Africans should once again expect rolling power outages today as Eskom announces its plan to implement Stage 2 load shedding for the second day in a row.

Load shedding was implemented on 16th October due to a shortage in generating capacity. Unplanned breakdowns saw 10 500MW of power missing from the grid which ultimately led to Eskom’s inability to meet demand.

One of the key issues for Eskom involves a coal conveyor belt breaking down at Medupi power station. Eskom is currently feeding coal to the power station manually but it is a laborious task.

With this and several other problems on the grid that means load shedding is once again scheduled to take place today from 9AM until 11PM.

We’ve compiled a list of ways to find your load shedding schedule online over at this link.

“We understand the inconvenience that comes with load shedding and want to assure out customers and South Africans at large that our objective is not to implement load shedding; if necessary, to do so at minimal levels and with as much predictability as possible,” acting group chief executive for Eskom, Jabu Mabuza, said in a statement.

Despite what Mabuza says, load shedding negatively impacted Matric exams which kicked off on Wednesday. Students who were meant to sit for the Computer Application Technology exam on Wednesday were not able to take it because, well, computers need electricity.

Earlier this morning MEC for education in Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi shared a report regarding the impact of load shedding on Matric exams.

Load shedding is expected to last for at least one week and the risk of more generating units malfunctioning is rather high.
