Pokémon fan artists rush to draw the new Gigantamax reveals

Yesterday, after a leak, we got a new trailer for Pokémon Sword and Shield which revealed several new Gigantamax forms for Pokémon from generation one. And, as tradition, the fan artists of the world have taken to drawing them all.

After less than 24 hours since the reveal we’ve seen dozens of works of art for these new additions, though it must be said that we’ve seen significantly less when compared to other trailers, such as those for Sirfetch’d just recently.

We assume this is because of the apathy here as Game Freak once again returns to its original Pokémon to update them instead of focusing on something new. The entire trailer is filled with Pokémon from the past, and it seems even the ravenous fan artists (who will usually draw anything) are a bit tired of this, along with everyone else.

Regardless one favourite did emerge from this in the Gigantamax form of Meowth. It seems that Game Freak has taken the old Longcat meme and just put it in their game. This continues a trend of the developer taking their old designs and simply making them longer, as can be seen in the first piece of art below with Alolan Exeggutor and Galarian Weezing also being stretched out when given their new forms.

While Twitter is usually the best place to find fan art the header image above comes from Reddit user /u/Xsplosive who made the first Meowth / Longcat piece that we saw.

With Sword and Shield releasing in less than a month there’s still some time for the community at large to be wowed by some new reveal for these titles. While lots of fan art may be one thing, there is a general sense of lacking enthusiasm in the community as these new games have shown to improve very little on the Pokémon formula.
