LG bringing the dual-screen touting G8X ThinQ to South Africa in November

Like many smartphone makers, LG had a new flagship device that it unveiled at IFA 2019 in September in the form of the dual-screen sporting G8X ThinQ. At the time it was unclear whether LG planned to bring the device to South Africa, the now the company that it will indeed land locally next month.

To that end it will be available via a handful of local networks in November, although a precise date has not been mentioned, so it’s unclear when exactly in November it will be available.

We do know how much the LG G8X ThinQ will cost when it does arrive, however, with a recommended price tag of R15 999 listed by the company’s SA outfit.

At the time of writing LG notes that Vodacom, MTN and Cell C will carry the device (in Aurora Black only), with the firm banking on the gaming-focused features of the G8X ThinQ proving tempting enough to pry the cash out of consumer hands.

The Dual Screen on offer here is a 6.4″ Full HD (2340×1080) affair, with the firm adding the ability to flip 360 degrees and a smaller 2.1″ mono display up front to act as a cover for the smartphone portion of the device. The screen is also detachable should you wish to have a regular smartphone form factor on hand.

Speaking of the smartphone, it’s not low on specs, featuring most of the components one expects from a premium flagship phone in 2019. Here an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset is present, along with 6GB RAM, 128GB storage, a 4 000mAh battery and dual camera setup on the rear (12MP standard, 13MP ultrawide).

By modern smartphone standards then it is packing quite a bit, and at R16k could prove relatively good value for money. We’ve been impressed by some of the LG mobile hardware of late, but the main issue for the firm right now is visibility, with Samsung and Huawei winning in that department locally.

Perhaps then the G8X ThinQ will sway more savvy smartphone users out there.
