With so much tech orbiting the Earth it was only a matter of time before a human had a close encounter with space tech.

That’s what happened at the weekend when a couple discovered a satellite had crashed on their farm.

As you can see from the video above, the satellite is emblazoned with branding for Samsung’s Space Selfie marketing stunt.

As far as marketing excercises go, the Space Selfie was a clever one. Users could take a selfie and stand a chance of their photo being displayed on a Samsung Galaxy S10 5G that was floating in the stratosphere.

Sadly the marketing excercise was not open to South Africans, according to the official website.

Our disappoint at not being able to get our mugs in space aside, the satellite was launched from Iowa on Friday according to Business Insider.

That would mean that the satellite was up there for less than a day but nonetheless, Samsung claims the satellite’s arrival on a Michigan couple’s doorstep was planned, although complications arose.

“During this planned descent of the balloon to land in the US, weather conditions resulted in an early soft landing in a selected rural area. No injuries occurred and the balloon was subsequently retrieved. We regret any inconvenience this may have caused,” Samsung wrote in a statement.

The Space Selfie campaign doesn’t appear to have been stopped because of this. The firm launched the initiative last week with Cara Delevingne who uploaded the first selfie to space.

The satellite that met its untimely doom was reportedly collected by Raven Industries which manufactured the balloon the satellite used.
