DDos Attacks on South African ISPs have subsided

This past Sunday, 27th October, several South African internet service providers (ISPs) were hit by distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks which left customers unable to access various parts of the internet. Thankfully this seems to have mostly remedied.

The three ISPs which were affected – Afrihost, Axxess and Webafrica – have updated their respective network status pages to remove mention of the attacks.

Afrihost is the only ISP which provides an update on the situation: “Please note that we are still monitoring the network after the DDOS attacks. We will keep you updated as time progresses. We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused.”

This update, Afrihost writes, is listed under the “Low Impact” category on their network status page and have further labelled it as “intermittent connectivity”.

Axxess claims that all of its services, including fibre, ADSL, mobile and more, are currently at 100% connectivity. Visiting their network status tool will result in a “All’s well! Everything is okay ;)” message.

Finally Webafrica has also removed mention of the DDoS attacks but there are several open issues on their network page, such as maintenance on the Vumatel infrastructure.

If you are a customer of these ISPs and are still experiencing problems, it may be worth opening a ticket with them now. Trying to do so in the midst of the DDoS attacks wouldn’t have helped much as the client services were slammed with requests at that time. As Webafrica customers we were on hold for 30 minutes on Sunday (before hanging up), shortly after the DDoS attacks went into full swing.

Using a VPN is also a proven way to skirt around this issue should it crop up in the same way again, and it was how we were able to fully access the internet over the past few days.
