Twitter makes moves to ban political advertising

Facebook has drawn harsh criticism recently following a decision to not fact check or remove misinformation shared by politicians.

Now Twitter chief executive officer Jack Dorsey has said that his platform will simply ban all political advertising.

“We’ve made the decision to stop all political advertising on Twitter globally. We believe political message reach should be earned not bought,” Dorsey wrote in a Twitter thread.

The CEO explained that politicians earn reach when a Twitter user decides to follow them. Allowing politicians to buy advertising removes that choice and gives them the ability to push highly targeted adverts at somebody who may not want to see them.

Of course, some folks fear banning political adverts will favour incumbents but Dorsey says that many social movements have grown organically on Twitter without the help of advertising.

As you might expect, Dorsey’s announcement drew criticism but it also found support.

“Twitter just walked away from hundreds of millions of dollars of potential revenue, a very dumb decision for their stockholders,” manager of Trump’s election campaign, Brad Parscale said, according to The Hill.

“Will Twitter also be stopping ads from biased liberal media outlets who will now run unchecked as they buy obvious political content meant to attack Republicans,” the campaign manager asked.

On the other side of the coin spokesperson for Joe Biden’s campaign, Bill Russo, welcomed Twitter’s decision.

“When faced with a choice between ad dollars and the integrity of our democracy, it is encouraging that, for once, revenue did not win out,” Russo said.

Twitter’s decision will take effect on 22nd November with more details about the policy expected to be revealed on 15th November according to CNN.
