Jesus is King, the new album by Kanye West, has an experimental short film to accompany it which will only be showing in IMAX theatres. South African fans don’t need to miss out, however, as the piece will be available in the country for a limited time.
When we say limited, we really do mean it as Jesus is King will only be on screens for one day, in one time slot. This coming Friday – 9th November – the film will play across four theatres at 14:30.
Those four theatres are Eastgate and Mall of Africa (both in Gauteng), Gateway Commercial (KwaZulu-Natal) and Capegate (Western Cape).
And, well, that’s it. That’s your one chance to see it in IMAX locally. It doesn’t help that the showing is right in the middle of a work day either. Thankfully, it is possible to try and go see it during your lunchbreak, as the runtime is just 31 minutes.
As this is a shorter experience ticket prices are slightly lower at R70, and can only be booked on the Ster-Kinekor website, the theatre chain which handles IMAX in the country.
At the time of writing there are ample seats available at every theatre. Aside from lower interest for such a limited release, the IMAX theatres each have dozens of seats available, so you should be able to attend even if you book a bit late.
It’s worth noting here that all four showings are in 2D, so you won’t need to bother with the 3D glasses.
While you can watch a trailer for this film, it really doesn’t explain anything. Instead the official synopsis provides a bit of information:
“Filmed in the summer of 2019, ‘Jesus is King’ brings Kanye West’s famed Sunday Service to life in the Roden Crater, visionary artist James Turrell’s never-before-seen installation in Arizona’s Painted Desert. This one-of-a-kind experience features songs arranged by West in the gospel tradition along with new music from his forthcoming album ‘Jesus is King’.”
Love or hate Kanye West, it’s nice to see these limited releases happening on our shores. Ster-Kinekor seems to be making a habit of it, as last week for Halloween they had a one night only event for the Ridley Scott’s original Alien movie.
