US Embassy and Silicon Cape to host hackathons focused on tackling GBV

Earlier this year the topic of gender-based violence was thrust into sharp relief and two organisations want to keep the conversation going while finding a solution.

Those two organisations are the US Embassy and Silicon Cape.

Together the pair will host four hackathons over the course of a year under the title – Hackathons for South Africa: Digital Solutions for Real World Challenges.

The first of these hackathons will take place from 23rd – 24th November in Cape Town at the EY V&A Waterfront offices.

“Emerging software developers, IT professionals, trainers, civil society organisations, students, academics and professionals with expertise relevant to the theme are all invited to attend the event and create innovative digital solutions to the problem of gender-based violence,” the organisers wrote in a press release.

The goal is to use tech to make communities safer and ultimately, curb gender-based violence.

“Through these hackathons we hope to bring real solutions to the fore that could help real people to either change their reality or perception for the better. We want to instil hope and would like to upskill all participants with new mental models and frameworks that they could apply to other areas of their working or personal lives. Most importantly, we want to build stronger communities and build a bridge between South Africa and the USA,” chairperson at Silicon Cape, Dr Sumarie Roodt said.

As this is a hackathon prizes are up for grabs as well.

The winning team will walk away with R25 000 while the runner up will receive R15 000. There will also be R5 000 in spot prizes at the event as well.

AWS will also be giving the winner $10 000 in AWS Promotional Credit, $5 000 worth of AWS Business Support and access to the AWS Activate program.
