SENTECH has launched its own broadband service for rural areas

SENTECH is a state owned enterprise that is licensed to deliver broadcast and digital content to South Africans but the entity is now expanding its business.

At AfricaCom currently on the go in Cape Town, SENTECH announced the launch of its new broadband offering – SENTECH CONNECT.

The offering will provide connectivity to healthcare, education, and government services in under-serviced and rural areas. Speeds will range from 10Mbps to 100Mbps.

“SENTECH is well positioned to play a significant role in the implementation of SA Connect’s mandate and servicing of government with wireless broadband services,” chief executive officer at SENTECH, Mlamli Booi, said in a media statement.

The hope is that this connectivity will allow for the creation of smart classrooms, smart city services and improve public safety initiatives while also encouraging the growth of the internet of things.

The mention of SA Connect is important as the initiative hasn’t shaken things up much since its inception in 2013. Indeed earlier this year, the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services (now simply known as the Department of Communications) said that a plan to fast track broadband infrastructure rollouts was in place and 400 additional facilities were earmarked to receive connectivity.

As of July 2019, SA Connect has brought broadband connectivity to 570 facilities including schools and healthcare facilities.

“There is no denying how vital connectivity has become and we need to ensure that as a country we can tap into the massive potential it will usher in. SENTECH has gladly accepted the task of ensuring the country’s connectivity, especially in rural and under-serviced areas. Our organisation’s intellect, established infrastructure and experienced personnel makes us the ideal fit to do the job effectively and efficiently,” said Booi.
