“Berlin area” earmarked as location for the next Tesla Gigafactory

With many big-name auto manufacturers calling Germany home, it makes a degree of sense that Elon Musk would want to throw Tesla into that mix.

Speaking at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, Musk said that Gigafactory 4 will be located in the Berlin area. This follows Tesla teasing that it would reveal the location of its European Gigafactory soon.

Berlin will join New York State, Shanghai and Nevada as Gigafactory locations.

On that note, the Gigafactory in Shanghai just recently completed construction. The factory in Nevada opened in 2016 but is still under construction according to The Verge.

Over on Musk’s press portal of choice – Twitter – the Tesla chief executive officer said that the Berlin factory would build batteries, powertrains and vehicles starting with the Model Y.

The Berlin factory is expected to be operational in 2021 according to Tesla’s latest earnings report. While that seems lofty, it’s worth remembering that the factory in Shanghai was built in just ten months.

The Shanghai Gigafactory is only manufacturing vehicles on a trial basis as Tesla awaits the appropriate licenses from government.

We’d ask out loud when a Gigafactory would land in Africa but as we can’t even purchase a Tesla locally, we’ll just smile and congratulate Germany.
