Pokémon Sword & Shield too easy? Change Battle Style from Switch to Set

Early reviewers and other players of the recently released Pokémon Sword and Shield share a common complaint that the games are not difficult enough, even if you’re not grinding out levels or min-maxing your team.

This is due to a variety of factors like experience share always being on and the AI not being the best opponents out there.

While the latest Pokémon game does no have difficulty options to choose from, there is one part of the setting that even veteran players overlook or outright don’t know of.

That’s the “Battle Style” which you can find in the options menu and access right as you get control of the game. This has two options: “Switch” and “Set”.

Switch is the default and has been for all Pokémon games. When you knock out a defending Pokémon the game will tell you which Pokémon your opponent is sending out next, and then it gives you the chance to switch your own for a more favourable matchup.

Set removes this option and simply has your opponent send out their new Pokémon immediately. Your current Pokémon that may be damaged or with a poor matchup will remain in the active state to take on the new challenger.

This may seem like a small change but it can drastically change how you approach battles, especially near the end of the game as you take on more opponents which have fuller teams. Your chances to switch are now reduced to when your own Pokémon are knocked out, or in the middle of a battle like usual, giving up your attack or item use for the turn.

While you’re in the options menu (pictured below) make sure to change the text speed and other settings as you see fit. With a franchise as old as this most players already have preferences for this screen.
