Naruto Excadrill & an invisible Poké Ball: Adventures in Sword & Shield

Like many others we played right through the latest entries in the Pokémon franchise this weekend, and made liberal use of the Nintendo Switch’s capture button to grab stills and short clips of our trip through the Galar region.

We’d be remiss not to share these with you with two particular ones being of note, both mentioned in the headline.

Before we go any further: this story contains spoilers for Pokémon Sword and shield. We’ll be covering cutscenes from the story, later Pokémon designs and more.

The first is the running animation of the Pokémon Excadrill. Certain Pokémon have what’s called an overworld spawn, which means that they are visible without needing to wade into the tall grass, much like the Let’s Go games.

Upon seeing you, overworld spawned Pokémon will make a mad dash towards you to engage in a battle. The animation for Excadrill has it throwing its arms back and executring a convincing Naruto run.

The other one worth mentioning is a common glitch that we’ve seen experienced by many others. In the post game section your rival Hop will catch one of the two legendary Pokémon (Zacian or Zamazenta) by throwing an invisible Poké Ball.

After a bright flash the Pokémon will be captured in a regular Poké Ball, but Hop’s throwing animation shows no such thing in his hand.
