Patent design shows PS5 controller will look a lot like the DualShock 4

Next year should be an exciting time for gaming hardware, at least on the console side of things as both Microsoft and Sony are readying to launch next-gen offerings in 2020. At the moment it is the PlayStation 5 which we have heard the most about, and the latest bit of news concerns the controller that the PS5 will be employing.

To that end a recently filed patent in Japan has revealed what the DualShock 5 may look like and, for all intents and purposes, it does not look too dissimilar to the controller used on the PS4.

As you can see in the image above, the basic DualShock design template has been retained, with a similar looking D-Pad and button layout present too. The only real change we can see from the patent images is the introduction of a USB Type-C port on the back of the controller, which is a detail that Wired noted during its exclusive hands-on with an early version of the PS5.

The only other noteworthy element of the patent is that the portions of the controller you hold onto are a bit thicker than that of the DualShock 4, and whether that leads to a better ergonomic experience is unclear, with the previous iteration never truly suffering from any woes in that department.

If this design looks a little lacklustre, we’re with you on that front, and we’re hoping that Sony has a “Pro” model in the works with a high degree of customisation, such as the Xbox Elite model, which is the better overall console controller in our opinion.

Going solely off of the patent here, it appears as if the PS5 will not be wowing in the peripherals department just yet. Still there is time to rectify this between now and its release next year.
